When the psoas is relaxed and its proper length, the psoas offers a supporting shelf for the organs of the lower abdomen. The psoas muscle is next to the kidneys. All of the emotions that affect the kidneys will affect the psoas. The kidneys being associated with the water element in Chinese medicine are affected by cold, fear or fright. These emotions produce a chilling effect on the kidneys, psoas and even the lower back. These emotions, over time, can lock up the lower back and psoas muscle. The psoas and kidneys respond to warmth. The psoas muscle is a supporting shelf below the kidneys in the back, which makes the organs happy and secure. By doing certain exercises, the kidneys, psoas and lumbar spine region are warmed and energized. This will keep the psoas at its proper length and your body happy. If the PSOAS Muscle becomes shortened due to unnecessary or excess tension, this will pull everything else out of balance, causing the person to be round shouldered and have a slump or sway back posture.
Shortening of the psoas can also pull on the femur (thighbone), causing the upper leg to rotate outward. Then the lower leg will turn to compensate twisting the two lower leg bones, the tibia and fibula, out of their proper alignment. This pulling can produce a torsion effect, an outward twisting. This torsion may prevent the foot from resting squarely on the ground. The resulting foot will roll during walking & can create an additional source of stress and pain for the entire body. If the psoas is too short on one side, this will case many of the muscles on both sides of the body to compensate for the one sided pull. This can cause flat feet, bow legged or knock-kneed alignments, weak ankles, cramping pain in the arches of the feet, tilting of the pelvis to one side, pain and tenderness or stiffness of the spine. The pull of the psoas muscle can cause such rigidity that the thighbones will be unable to rotate properly and will cause grinding in the hip socket.
